For the second year in a row Venice will host hundreds of students from all around the region Veneto ready to take part to the project IMUN organized by the United Network Europa which has already been done all around Italy since 2017.

IMUN 2019 will be located in the Liceo Benedetti-Tommaseo from the 28.01 to the 30.01 and it is the most important simulation of  the United Nations General Assembly in Italy and Europe which has as protagonists the actual high school students who will play the part of Ambassadors.

For sure this is a big opportunity for them to have a go in an unique experience such as this and literally become Ambassadors and diplomats for a day in order to get closer to the diplomatic and politic world and to understand how ONU assemblies and all of the most important international organizations work.

The topics which will be discussed and addressed are a lot, every one of them deals with the most current events such as internationals conflicts, sustainable development in the developing countries, changes of the climate, international arms trafficking and so on; all of them are divided in three Committees (CSTD, IOM, WFP) each specialized in certain topics.

All the discussions will be taken in English and will allow the participants to try  new experiences and learn, testing in first person the typical activities of diplomacy such as making speeches, prepare resolution drafts, negotiate with the allies and the opponents, resolve conflicts… learning how to behave inside the committees and adopting the procedure rules of the United Nations.

We’re not dealing with an easy job therefore is already planned a very in-depth formation and research made by teachers and experts.

As already written before the students will be divided in three different committees, one of them being called IOM or OIM (International Organization for Migrants) which was founded in 1951 and it’s the main intergovernmental organization in the context of migration. With 173-member states, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants. It mainly works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people.

IOM’s Mission in Italy serves as the coordinating office for the Mediterranean countries, both in operational terms and in terms of developing strategies for the management of migration flows. The activities cover different areas of intervention, such as technical cooperation, counter-trafficking and assistance to victims, migration and development, labor and circular migration, assisted voluntary returns including reintegration in the countries of origin, facilitating family reunification through DNA testing, public information activities to promote a better understanding of the migration phenomenon, research initiatives, medical work including the prevention of the spread of disease and facilitation of information and access to public health care by immigrants in Italy. IOM promotes dialogue through workshops and international seminars on migration-related topics; develops information and training programmes for officials and practitioners; performs pilot projects for selective migration (identification and skills’ assessment of potential migrants in areas of major migration pressure); and elaborates orientation and integration modules for migrant workers.

For sure this year IMUN will be as memorable and formative as the past years and the fact that for the second time Venice is the host is very important: it brings actuality in a beautiful, antique and full of culture city. Let’s get started!
